This week we are going to talk about yet another contender in the field of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom alternatives. In the spotlight today is Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo developed by Serif (Europe) Ltd. Each program comes at an affordable $49.99 with no subscription required. Both also come with unlimited updates and a whole ton of neat functions. In order to properly talk about each respectively we are going to have to dissect each separately.

Affinity Designer

First and foremost, Affinity Designer comes with he ability to read multiple file types including PSD files so that you can import your old work. It’s functions allow for a range of artwork to be designed such as 2D game art and mobile app design. The software is able to zoom in so far that you can snag pixels and correct colors on a deep level. It also has special print output controls and image export controls. The most fascinating thing about this software is its art boards and ability to multitask/split workspaces for a dual view.

Affinity Photo

This software also allows for PSD import along with supporting several other file types. You have a dedicated Raw workspace with several different tools, functions and effects to do almost anything with your photos. Live blend modes allow users to see there effects take place as they are choosing them, meaning no more waiting to see if an effect looks good. At a glance Affinity Photo seems to be a fairly sophisticated photo editing software. Built with the ability to add effects, stack/blend photos and so much more, this is a piece of software every photographer should get to know.

The developers behind these two have stated there will be no subscriptions and free upgrades for the lifespan of the software. These two definitely get a stamp of approval and are must haves for designers! Available only on Mac (coming soon to Windows). Check out both on their main website.
